To our dear Hammie turning 1

Howdy, Jenn here. I am taking over Ein’s blog for this post while he snores away with that crazy leak of his. I wanted to take the time to reflect on what a year it’s been and to celebrate the positive impact Ein has made on our lives, despite sleepless nights not knowing if he would make it, battles with insurance, disagreements with medical staff, commutes back and forth to the hospital, living out of a suitcase, losing 80% of our belongings in a moving truck fire, putting careers on hold, etc. All of it doesn’t matter as long as Ein is healthy and happy. Our hearts are filled with gratitude to all of you who have taken this wild roller coaster ride with us every dip and high along the way. šŸ’•

Happy 1st birthday to our quirky, flirty, nosy ham roll 🐽 We’ve seen him through surgeries, procedures, PT milestones, setbacks, fake whining, lots of arm dinner rolls, ambulance/plane/car rides, 3 hospitals, 3 states, 3 helmets, 365+ days of pumping to a machine, good times, tough times and wouldn’t have it any other way. Cheers to another crazy year of hammie moments.

Rocketing from 2 lbs to 21 lbs

Ein’s home coming was an overwhelming mix of emotions but mostly glorious with a side of chaotic. Babies are so resilient and way more adaptive to change than we adults are, as we continue to scramble and equip the home to meet the needs of a baby with complex medical conditions. It’s been surreal and hectic with last minute runs to the store already but so well worth it. Most new parents may overlook the significance of a baby coming home and dive right into settling in but for us, it meant so much more as we embraced and soaked every moment of it after waiting for nearly a year.Ā

For his real birthday, 10/6, which luckily ended up being at home rather than the hospital, we brought Ein downstairs and out to the backyard for the first time. He initially was fussy and slept through dinner but enjoyed the outside with all the new sights, mesmerized by the lights and fire pit. It was cute to see him over excited and curious about everything.

Now that I’m home, the uprights have been placing me on different kinds of sitting mechanisms to see what I like / tolerate better. Well, here’s my ranking thus far:

Tie for first place depending on my mood:

Bumbo – I use to not tolerate this kind of sitting because I was all wobbly and the posture support wasn’t enough to the point where I got tired very quickly. Now that I’m starting to get the hang of sitting on my own and building those muscles, this is an au’some seat because it’s strap-less and I can be my nosy-self sitting upright to look at everything around me. I’m also more willing to grab things and explore in this position.Ā

Mini rocker – definitely a great go-to when an upright is lazy and wants to dump me somewhere while doing something else. Only straps are at the bottom. There’s vibration option and rocking motion which helps to calm me and eventually puts me to sleep. Posture support isn’t the greatest but they usually put rolls around me so I don’t lean too much on one side.Ā

2nd place: high chair. Only because it’s higher up and has a greater view of the entire room while also being more level with the uprights. There’s a lot of entertainment put in front of me on the tray. It also has the ability to lean back when I’m getting tired but sleep is for the weak and I don’t believe in any of that. What I don’t like are the straps that go over my shoulder and near my G-J tube site that is currently sensitive / tender. It also gets a bit hot and sweaty on my back with the extra padding behind me.

3rd place: adult rocker. As long as it comes with an upright. Please BYOF (fan) though, I get overheated with all that body heat.Ā

4th place: bouncers. Cozy with vibration and at least I’m not laying down. But I think I’m outgrowing them as my feet are sticking out and butt touching the ground as I get bounced.Ā

5th place: sofa and patio furniture. Not much posture support so I become the leaning tower of Ein unless an upright is with me.Ā

6th place: cradle n’ swing. Initially I was mesmerized by the friends circling above me and the mirror but then I got fussy from being overheated in the snug bucket. The second time around, my fan was with me and I ended up going into a 2 hour slumber. The auto-swing action is pretty sweet. I may upgrade this rank, as long as I don’t get too chunky too fast. 🐽

7th place: ExerSaucer. I like this only if I’m in a good mood and not sleepy/lazy. But since the area around my G-J tube on the belly is tender, I don’t last very long, in the interim, until the site heals. It’s a great workout for my legs though!
